Do I Need A Medical Malpractice Lawyer?
Friday, January 27, 2012 19:48I had a baby on Monday, December 12. Very healthy pregnancy, no problems or complications. I was scheduled for a C-section due to my other 2 children being born that way and I also decided to have a tubal ligation. During my C-section another patient went into labor from what I could hear and they were talking among each other saying that they needed to hurry and get me out of the operating room. They finished me up quickly and took me to recovery. While in recovery one of the doctors came and touched my face and said, “I’m sorry we had to rush you out of there, but we had an emergency C section come in, but we got you all fixed up.” I was like okay and kinda out of it, with a lot of pain going on. Monday I had the baby. Tuesday they had me up walking and it was painful but not unbearable. Wednesday I felt like I was going to die. Sharp pain shooting everywhere, pressure in my abdominal and pelvis area, numbness in my right leg. This was the worse pain ever. I was suppose to be discharged this day but my doctor decided to keep me for observation. Thursday I was sent home still in lots of pain. I was told it was from the feeling coming back. By Sunday I was in so much pain I couldn’t stomach to look at my baby, sleep, or eat.I paged my doctor and she told me that i should take a laxative and do some walking around my house. I did what she suggested and I felt better a few hours so I continued to take the laxatives and walk until I could no longer stand it and couldn’t use the bathroom. Wednesday night I went to hospital where i had the baby. i was short or breathe, barely could stand, and in so much pain, i contemplated suicide. After the doctors in the er ran test. they found that my white blood count was 38,000 and that i had a sever infection which called for emergency surgery the next morning. My temp was 102.9. I had a pelvic abscess and fluids in my abdominal cavity. Drainage tubes were placed during surgery and I staid in the hospital for 5 days and released on antibiotics. One doctor wanted me to stay and start on antibiotics by mouth for 2 days before sending me home but then another doctor came in and sent me home. He felt as though they had did all they could do at this point. I left the hospital barely able to stand up straight. I was home 8 days and the symptoms came back. Fever.chills, pain, and a swollen bottom stomach. I went to my doctor appointment and they sent me back to the ER. White blood count 24,000 and in pain. They admitted. I was on over 4 different antibiotics. None of the doctors knew what was going on. I kept telling them over and over that the lower part of my stomach was swelling and they continued to over look it or listen to me. They would say it cellulite or brush it off. I laid in that hospital bed and suffered for days until the surgeon came to see me. I showed him the area where I was in so much pain. He immediately ordered warm compress on the area every 2 hours and he set me up to have an ultrasound of the area the next morning. The ultrasound revealed exactly what I had been complaining about. Fluid and infection had been building up inside my abdominal walls. I went for surgery later that day and they inserted drainage tubes once again. They kept me on the antibiotics. Fever came down, white blood count began coming down, pain was at a minimum. I could actually stand up and walk a short distance. Thank you God was all I could remember saying. I was in the hospital this time for almost 2 weeks away from my family, my newborn. I thought I would go crazy. I continue to ask what kind of infection did I have and they continue to tell me that they don’t know. I was discharged from the hospital with a PIC line and IV antibiotics. A nurse has to come to my home every other day. I have never had to endure so much pain and heartache at one time. I keep asking myself Why me? Could this have been prevented? Did my doctors do something wrong?

Infection is a known risk from any surgery including a c-section. It’s not uncommon that they missed it at first since many women are in pain for awhile, we all have different thresholds.
You would have to show your docs were actually negligent and that doesn’t sound like the case here. Sepsis is horrible and PICC lines are no fun but you’ll make a full recovery.
